background
The cocoa that Felchlin buys from Ghana comes from the Suhum-Kraboa-Coaltar district, 60 km northwest of the capital Accra. To the south of the area lies the coastal savannah, to the east the Aburi hill range forms the natural boundary and to the northwest the protected Attewa forest. The whole district is relatively hilly, with flat valleys crossed by rivers and streams.
The father of the “Suhum Cacao” project is Yayra Glover, a Ghanaian with strong roots in Switzerland. He studied here, worked here for many years and his family also lives here. His vision is to bring the cacao from the entire district onto the market as organic and fair trade cacao. In doing so, he supports his fellow countrymen in the production of a first-class raw material and in this way helps them to secure their livelihoods.
The cocoa growing area covers around 400 km2 with around 5,000 small farmers who produce their cocoa on an area of around 6,500 hectares. Up to now, the state has been the only seller of cocoa. After a lot of work, Yayra Glover managed to convince the Ghana Cocoa Board of his project. He is therefore the first person authorized to sell cocoa from the Suhum District to Felchlin with the approval of the Cocoa Board.
